I
n our culture Diksha is accorded even greater importance
than Shiksha (education). Our education is deemed
incomplete without this initiation ceremony. The first
mention of Diksha dates back to the Taittiriya Upanishad. In
our traditional Gurukul system, the educators took lot of tests
and examinations even after the formal education process
was completed. As part of their day to day activities, they
were made to take instant decisions, perform according to
the knowledge imparted to themwhile the students remained
unaware that they were being tested and evaluated. The
studentas were observed very minutely and it was only when
the educator was convinced that the student had passed the
tests that they were conferred the degree and allowed to
venture into other stages of life. The student years are the
best times in anybody’s life. Once we receive our degree,
there is a sense of happiness but at the same time there come
lots of responsibilities.
